Emery’s Kitchen Wisdom & Tips

Here are some insider tips to ensure your brownies turn out perfect every time!

  • Measuring Flour: Spoon and level your flour to avoid compacting it. Too much flour can make brownies cakey instead of fudgy, so precision is key.
  • Baking Time: Slightly underbake for that gooey texture. They’ll continue cooking as they cool, so don’t worry if the center looks soft.
  • Cutting Cleanly: Chill brownies in the freezer for 10 minutes before slicing. Use a sharp knife and wipe it after each cut for neat squares.

Flavor Switch-Ups: Emery’s Marshmallow Brownies Ideas

Want to mix things up? These variations add a fun twist to the classic Marshmallow Brownies while keeping the fudgy, gooey essence intact. Try one or create your own!

  • Nutty Crunch: Fold in chopped walnuts or pecans into the batter before baking. The nuts add a satisfying crunch against the soft marshmallow swirl.
  • Caramel Drizzle: After baking, drizzle warm caramel sauce over the top. It pairs beautifully with chocolate and enhances the sticky sweetness.
  • Mint Chocolate: Add a few drops of peppermint extract to the batter and top with crushed candy canes for a refreshing, festive twist.

How Emery Loves to Serve Marshmallow Brownies

These brownies are versatile and pair wonderfully with various accompaniments. Here are my favorite ways to enjoy them for an extra special treat!

  • Vanilla Ice Cream: Serve a warm brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The cold creaminess balances the rich, fudgy texture perfectly.
  • Glass of Milk: A classic pairing! A cold glass of milk cuts through the sweetness and complements the chocolatey goodness.
  • Hot Cocoa: Enjoy with a mug of hot cocoa for a double dose of comfort. It’s like a cozy hug on a chilly day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do marshmallows melt in hot cocoa?

Marshmallows melt in hot cocoa due to their composition of sugar, gelatin, and air. The heat from the cocoa causes the sugar to dissolve and the gelatin to soften, breaking down the structure. This results in a gooey, sweet addition to your drink.

When making Marshmallow Brownies, this melting property is key for achieving a sticky, fluffy topping as the marshmallows blend into the warm brownie surface during baking.

Why don’t old marshmallows melt?

Old marshmallows don’t melt well because they lose moisture over time, becoming stale and hard. The sugar and gelatin in them crystallize or dry out, preventing the structure from breaking down under heat.

For recipes like Marshmallow Brownies, always use fresh marshmallows to ensure they melt into that signature gooey layer. If you have old ones, try reviving them by sealing them with a slice of bread overnight to restore some softness.

How to melt marshmallows for baking?

To melt marshmallows for baking, place them in a heatproof bowl over a double boiler on low heat, stirring occasionally until smooth. Add a teaspoon of butter or oil to prevent sticking and enhance creaminess.

For Marshmallow Brownies, this melted mixture can be swirled into the batter or used as a topping. Alternatively, melt them directly on brownies in the oven during the last few minutes of baking for a toasted effect.

How long to put marshmallows in the oven?

When baking marshmallows, such as for Marshmallow Brownies, place them in the oven for 2-5 minutes at 350°F (175°C). This short time is enough to melt or toast them into a golden, gooey layer without burning. Keep a close eye, as they can brown quickly.

If using a broiler for a torched effect, 1-2 minutes is usually sufficient. Always adjust based on your oven’s strength and desired texture for the perfect result.

What happens when you melt marshmallows in the microwave?

Melting marshmallows in the microwave causes them to puff up dramatically as the air inside expands from the heat. They can triple in size within 10-20 seconds on high power, becoming soft and sticky.

For Marshmallow Brownies, microwave in short bursts, stirring in between, to avoid overflow or burning. Use a microwave-safe bowl and watch closely. Once melted, they can be spread over brownies for a quick, gooey topping with minimal effort.
